Types of Sales Orders in Dynamics AX 2012

In this blog post, we will look into different sales order types present in AX 2012. When a sales order is created, AX allows you to choose among the following three sales order types:
  • Journal 
  • Subscription
  • Sales order
There are other two types of sales order which are created through return order management or project management. 
  • Return order
  • Item requirement

Default sales order type

AX provides you an option to choose a default type for every new sales order created in system. You can provide the default order type under:

Accounts Receivable Parameter -> General ->  Sales -> Default Value -> Order type


Let's shed some light on the types of sales orders here.

Journal

Definition

This types of sales order is referred as Dummy or Draft sales order. 



Uses

Journal type sales order are used in a scenario where you don't want to process sales order further. All posting operations (ConfirmationPicking listPacking slip and Invoice) are disabled in this scenario and can only be enable when order type is changed.

Sales order

Definition

It is a normal sales order, it is an order issued by a business or sole trader to a customer. A sales order may be for products or services. Unlike Journal type of sales order, whole cycle of sales order (ConfirmationPicking listPacking slip and Invoice) can be easily performed.


Uses

This type of order can have status from Open order -> Invoice. Orders which are fully invoiced cannot be edited.


Subscription

Definition

This one is really interesting type of sales order. This type of sales order is used in recurring scenarios. 

Uses

It is used when it is require to sell same item/service to the same customer repeatedly over a period of time. One of the best examples would be (Internet services, TV cable service etc.). Whenever an invoice is posted on this type of sales order, AX sets the order status again to Open order. 

Return order

Definition

As name suggests, these types of orders are created when customer is return full or partial order.

Uses

Return orders are used when customer wants to return partial or full order, the return could have multiple reasons like (Good damaged while delivery, late delivery etc.). Inventory gets back updated to the quantity being received.

Item subscription

Definition

This type of order get created automatically by AX when you make a sales of item through project. The project number can be seen in the Project column. Picking list, Picking list registration and Packing slip will get posted through project module only.


Uses

Item subscription type of sales order is used when you consume some of your inventory or service items as a part of your project. You can create item subscription under

Project management and accounting
-> Common -> Item tasks -> Item requirements
